Things to Do in the Big City of Wichita

The Wichita Airport is only 12 minutes away from Tanganyika Wildlife Park, with hotels and bed and breakfasts very close by. Plan to stay in Wichita for a while because there are so many other awesome things to do there. Here are just a few:

  • Botanica Wichita.  Located on 18 acres in the center of town, this is a collection of 30 different sections for lovers of the outdoors to explore. Children can explore the children’s garden, which is full of installations to engage their interest. The butterfly garden is another favorite. In spring and early summer, over 150,000 daffodils and tulips explode with color, while during the holiday season, the gardens become illuminated by more than one million lights.
  • The Museum of World Treasures. Packed full of exhibits on natural and military history as well as world civilizations, this museum has something for everyone. Visitor favorites are a T-Rex named Ivan and stunning mummies from Egypt.
  • Old Cowtown Museum. This replica 1870 village and its 54 historically accurate buildings give visitors a taste of life on the frontier.  Cowtown’s costumed interpreters share information about the buildings and the artifacts within them, while regular gunfights add to the excitement.
  • Arkansas River Bike Path. This 10-mile paved trail skirts the river and gives walkers and bikers alike a great way to explore downtown Wichita and some of its attractions, including Cowtown and the American Indian Center.
  • Frank Lloyd Wright Allen House. Lovers of architecture shouldn’t miss a guided tour of one of America’s greatest architect’s houses.  Allen House is one of the last prairie houses Wright designed, and it perfectly showcases his skills and Wichita’s beautiful landscape.
  • Exploration Place. This science and discovery center offers live science shows, exhibitions on the workings of our bodies and homes, a miniaturized Kansas for visitors to explore, and even a planetarium.
  • The Keeper of the Flame. Built on sacred land, at the junction of the Big and Little Arkansas, the Keeper of the Flame, illuminated at night, stands 44 feet tall surrounded by a “ring of fire”—making it a truly stunning sight.

Wichita is also a shopper’s paradise, offering everything from major chains to quirky vintage shops. In addition, it is rapidly becoming a foodie destination, with over 1000 restaurants offering cuisine from all over the world for visitors to savor.
