Global giraffe conservation efforts are at a critical point in history. The giraffe is perhaps the most recognizable ungulate in Africa, but it finds itself at a crossroads. While this beautiful mammal continues to thrive in certain parts of the continent, many subspecies are now on the Critically Endangered list, including the graceful Nubian giraffe.
Extinct in Egypt, Eritrea, and the Democratic Republic of Congo, the Nubian giraffe needs all the help it can get. The Giraffe Conservation Foundation (GCF) leads the way in the conservation of critically endangered Nubian giraffes, from breeding programs to translocation. If it is going to successfully rebuild the Nubian giraffe population in Africa, it needs your help with Operation Twiga.
Giraffe Conversation’s Operation Twiga
Twiga is the Swahili word for ‘giraffe.’ GCF runs Operation Twiga as the translocation program for giraffe conservation, focusing specifically on areas where Nubian giraffes are critically endangered or already extinct in the hope of re-establishing the local population. Urgency is rising, and every stage of GCF’s lauded Operation Twiga has been able to relocate healthy animals to protected national parks in Africa.
Survival is key, and GCF works hard to keep these lofty creatures safe as they breed and form herds within their chosen parks. GCF and Operation Twiga recently reintroduced about 15 more Nubian giraffes to Pian Upe Wildlife Reserve, where they joined the endangered giraffes that were moved in 2019. The team has great expectations for the Nubian subspecies within the safety of these parks, spearheading the conservation of Africa’s gentlest giants.
